A bit of Google’s history is quite interesting. Google was founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page on January of 1996. It was actually their research project while studying at Stanford University in California. Brin and Page aimed to create a better search engine that can determine the connection between websites as opposed to other search engines at the time that list and rank results by tallying the number of times a particular word was used on the page. They called their new system PageRank, in which the relationship among websites was established using several factors such as the quantity of pages and their relevance.
It was originally named "BackRub" to denote that the system determines the importance of a website by checking its backlinks. It will ultimately be changed to Google based on a misspelling of the term "googol", which was chosen to indicate that the system can give huge amount of information to users.
Stanford hosted Google in the beginning under the university’s website; and Google had its own domain in September 1997. A year later, the company was incorporated and was based on a garage somewhere in California.
You might be wondering how Google make its money. Although most of its services are free, Google derive its profits through advertisements much like in a TV network. Google also sells some searching tools and subscription services like Google Earth to boost its income.
However, the most popular service provided by Google is the web search which is free. This service has an organized interface and is admired for providing search results that are relevant to the searched keyword. That is why Google is the world’s most popular search engine today.
