Building a plasterboard wall

Using plasterboard to either install an interior wall or to repair an already existing wall in your house is a great way to spruce up your home. Plasterboard can also be used when trying to remedy a leaky or water damaged ceiling. If you are finding dings and cracks in your walls or ceilings, plaster is definitely an answer that is extremely affordable and easy to install yourself.

Plasterboard is also known as drywall. When using plasterboard, an entire house can be outfitted in about two to three days because the plasterboard is custom fit to the corners of the house. Another reason that people use plasterboard in their houses is because of the fact that it is resistant to fire. Installing plasterboard in your own house can make for a very easy way to reinforce a wall or to finish out a basement.

Before plasterboard, plasterwork involved several tools. Some of the common tools that were used in plasterwork were laths, floats, hammers and trowels. Laths were the traditional way of plastering. The lath is made of wood and is generally two to five feet in length per the timbers that the floor and partitions are set. A thicker lath would used when patching up a ceiling. Laths are nailed to break joints that are usually three feet wide. Floats are another tool used to spread the plaster along the laths.

If you are going to replace traditionally plastered walls, first make sure that the plaster is in good shape structurally. This would mean that the plaster is still bonded properly to the lath boards. If this is the case, then repairing minor or cosmetic cracks and damage could be done very easily with a single coat of plaster. Before you buy any of the materials from your local hardware store, talk to a professional so you can gauge which products would be the best for the project you're undertaking.

Plasterboards are great because they do not involve all of the materials and the hassle of traditional plastering. They can significantly improve the quality and safety of your home as well as bring the value up. Depending on the amount of damage you are trying to fix, make sure that you know what kind of materials would be the best fit. Investing time and effort in replacing original plaster might not be as effective as using a plasterboard. Look over the project and determine what would be the most cost effective way to proceed with.
