Drain Clearance - What Is It?    Bookmark and Share

Drain clearance as the term implies is simply clearing the drain of things that are blocking whatever should flow inside it; but the process involve is not so simple as it sometimes require the services of a professional plumber.

There will come a time when we will encounter a blocked drain in our homes just like anyone else and the first thing that comes to mind is to call a plumber. Calling a plumber to fix the problem is an alternative but in many cases, the situation can be repaired by the household owner themselves. Drain clearing is not a pleasant task yet it can be carried out by anyone by employing just a few tools.

You can spare yourself this rather dirty task if you have the extra budget to hire a plumber. But the truth is the only time you will need a professional is when you do not have a way into the drain or you do not have the proper equipment. In fact, majority of jobs requiring drain clearance only involve unclogging blocked sinks and toilets. These types of blocked drains can be repaired easily by servicing the U-trap using a plunger and a wire which can be fashioned from a coat hanger. A simple job like this will cost you more than £90 if you decide to hire a plumber.

There are many households in the UK that still endure continuous drain blockages and most of these households are old ones with drains that are made of narrow metal pipes. These old drains can easily be clogged with toilet papers flushed down the drain. You can just imagine the inconvenience it will give you when this happens. To avoid being in this kind of situation, it is recommended to flush hot water regularly and use caustic soda to further soften the blocking dirt and grime.

The wire coat hanger is perhaps the handiest tool you can use in unclogging external drains as it is flexible and inexpensive. There are however some drains that require sturdier tools like drain rods. They are basically a set of sticks which can be attached together to extend its length and reach far into the drain. They usually come with a corkscrew attachment which can be fixed at the tip of the last stick.

However, when you have done everything using these tools and the blockage won’t budge, perhaps you will need another tool like a strong liquid drain cleaner. A variety of liquid drain cleaners are readily available in most stores and they can either be alkaline or acid based. They are mainly used to soften and dissolve clogs. Be very careful though when using these chemicals as they can be harmful to your health as well as to your drains. Remember to read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow them.

Hiring the services of a professional plumber to perform drain clearance can cost you a small fortune these days. The task of unclogging your drain may seem complicated but in reality it is not except in severe cases where you need the services of a plumber. Such cases would include a stubborn blockage that will not dislodge, the drain system is damaged physically, and one of the drain pipes suffered a crack due to adverse weather conditions.

Keep in mind that most drain clearance can be done by almost anyone. The only things you need are a few inexpensive tools and the will to do an unpleasant task of drain clearance.
