Garden maintenance - tips for keeping your garden looking beautiful
A garden is a beautiful addition to a yard. Carefully planned, a garden can enhance the appearance of any home and help raise its value should an owner decide to sell. A garden can be as large or small as an owner wishes and can be filled with flowers, vegetables or both. To make a garden as functional and attractive as possible, there is planning involved that includes the layout of the area designated for the garden and the maintenance involved to keep it healthy and looking good.
In most cases, a garden should be in a spot that receives plenty of sunlight. This area should be marked off and cleared of all debris like stones, leaves, twigs, branches, etc. Leaves can be set aside and used for compost once the garden soil has been tilled and is ready for planting. Garden clearance involves gathering all debris, setting it aside and disposing of any debris that can't be recycled.
Cleaning a large garden area will sometimes require additional help, and if there's room in the budget for a professional gardener, he or she will get the job done quickly using professional tools like a lawn sweeper. If garden care isn't in the budget, use a wide rake and ask family and friends to help out.
Leaf blowers work well on sites that contain a lot of leaves. Blow the leaves to one corner of the garden and save for later use. Rakes can be metal or plastic and should be wide enough to cover large areas with each sweep. Leaf shredders can be rented and are great for shredding leaves that can be later mixed with garden soil and used as a compost. Any remaining leaves and debris should be placed in garden bags for removal. Industrial wet vacs work well to remove wet leaves that may remain after raking is complete.
Any overgrown bushes, hedges and trees that are part of the garden landscaping should be trimmed or removed. This will assure that the garden will receive the necessary sunlight it needs and give a neat and finished look to the entire yard.
Once a garden is planted and begins to blossom, garden clearance is a chore that should be done on a daily basis. Making sure the garden is watered properly and free of weeds guarantees a garden that will be filled with healthy, hearty and attractive plants and vegetables.
