How to Fit a Burglar Alarm
Various surveys have shown that break-ins in the United Kingdom are lower compared to a decade ago. This can't be attributed to an increase in the effectiveness of the police. It might be attributed to the availability of burglar alarm systems that are inexpensive and very easy to install. However, a lot of people think that these alarms are complicated to set up and fix but in reality they are simple to fit and most individuals can do it by themselves.
There is a big difference between a traditional alarm that uses wires and a wireless alarm system especially when we talk about simplicity of installation. Wireless burglar alarms do not require you to hire a professional to install the product. It also bypasses the use of wires making them blend well with your home décor. So here is a step-by-step guide that you can follow to fit a burglar alarm system in your property.
1. The first thing to do is to remove all the components of the burglar alarm from their packaging. The burglar alarm kit should include a couple of passive infrared detectors that detects movement, and a couple of contacts that senses when a window or door is opened. It should also include a control panel, a pair of sirens and a telephone lead that enables the alarm to notify your chosen numbers.
2. Remove the packaging strips on the contacts and sensors to start their batteries.
3. Place the control panel close to an electrical outlet and plug its power cord in. The control panel should also be near a telephone socket if your alarm includes a telephone alert facility. You should see a prompt on the panel display once you turn the power on. Input the 4-digit code during this time.
4. Program the control panel and input which sirens, passive infrared detectors and window or door contacts to be utilized. Push the test button on every device one at a time to carry this out. You should hear a beep from the control panel as a reply and a read out should also be seen on the screen displaying the added device. Next is to input the selected phone numbers if the alarm comes with a telephone alert facility.
5. Plug the telephone line into the control panel and perform a test call.
6. Verify that the radio range of the passive infrared detectors and door/window contacts are within the range of the control panel.
7. Place all the components in the position you have selected one by one and push the test button. The device should show on the control panel’s screen if it is within the range.
8. Install the door contact adjacent to the top of the door. Next is to fit the sensor on the frame in line with the door contact. The distance between the two devices should not be greater than 8mm. The ideal height of passive infrared detectors must be above the floor with a range of 1.7 – 2.3 meters.
9. Install the sirens on the external wall and fix it on the highest part. Arm the alarm by pressing the button with the ‘A’ label or in some instance, the lock symbol. Input the 4-digit user code you typed earlier to disable the alarm when needed.
