How to Open a Combination Lock    Bookmark and Share

A combination lock is a kind of lock that is not opened by a key but a series of numbers or symbols that when entered correctly will open the lock. The series may be entered using one or several rotating dials with engraved markings, usually numbers, which directly work together with the locking apparatus. Other combination locks utilize mechanical or electronic keypad for inputting the series.

A combination lock is used by many people to secure their possessions especially in offices and schools wherein it is quite simple to break into somebody’s locker. Most users of combination locks finds it difficult to unlock it the first time and it sure looks complicated, too, but in reality it is very easy and one can unlock it in a matter of seconds, that is if one knows the correct combination.

1. Distinguish the correct combination. Most combination locks utilize a 3-digit numerical code and each digit represents one number from 0 to 39. Check for this numerical code. It is normally located on the label at the back of the lock or sometimes in the packaging. It is best to memorize the code and then remove the label from the lock. Do not reveal your 3-digit code for obvious security reasons.

2. Have a firm grip on the lock with your left hand. Use your right thumb and index finger to operate the dial located in the middle of the combination lock.

3. Turn the dial to 0 and with your right thumb and index finger grip the center dial. Start to rotate the dial three times until the number 0 is directly level to the arrow that is engraved on top of the dial.

4. Try the first number and once the dial was set to 0, you are at this instant set to unlock the combination lock by means of the 3-digit numeric code. Let us say your code is 11-20-28. From the initial position of 0, rotate the dial clockwise until the number 11 is pointing to the arrow.

5. Move the dial to the second numeric code. This time, you have to perform two rotations instead of one prior to stopping at the second number. From the number 11, rotate the dial counterclockwise until the number 20 passed the arrow sign. Perform the second rotation by turning the dial counterclockwise but this time stop the dial when 20 is directly pointing to the arrow mark.

6. Move the dial to the third number. The last number on the series is 28, and to get there, rotate the dial clockwise until the number 28 is pointing to the arrow. By this time the shackle should have been released off the lock. Open the combination lock by pulling the shackle upwards.

7. Shut and secure the combination lock. Insert the shackle back into the hole and push it down into place. Next, rotate the dial to any number. Verify if the combination lock is really locked by pulling the shackle up. The combination lock is appropriately closed if the shackle did not move out.

There are two common reasons why a combination lock won’t open. First is that you may have key-in one or more number on the series wrongly, and the other is you may have rotated the dial in the wrong direction. Ensure that you have the correct numeric combination and correct directions before you panic and call for help.
