How to reduce your home energy bills
1. Save on water by changing your shower head- some shower heads have a high flow rate and thus consume a lot of energy. If you change the inefficient shower head, you will be able to save on your energy bills.
2. Arrange for an HVAC inspection- a certified technician will run an annual check to your home to ensure that your home's heating; ventilation and air-conditioning systems are operating at peak efficiency.
3. Keep all your heating systems clean as dirt and dust hinder air flow thus reducing efficiency, which translates to more energy to power them.
4. When out of the house, program the thermostat - this gives the air conditioner a break and you will cut the household electric bill by a few dollars per year.
5. Determine the size of the power unit that you need to use in your house. A unit that's over powered wastes energy and is less effective at reducing humidity. Therefore, shop for the right size to meet your power needs.
6. Seal all the cracks along door and window frames. A properly insulated and sealed home improves energy consumption by up to 20% per year. In fact, the insulation materials are also eligible for the 30% energy efficiency federal tax credit.
7. Change light bulbs from conventional bulbs to compact fluorescents(CFL) which use less energey and generate less heat. This saves you $35 in energy costs over the projected 10-year life of the bulb.
8. Unplug gadgets and appliances such as mobile chargers and microwave cords from power sources- the standby power these gadgets consume accounts to a considerable percentage of residential electricity use and unplugging them saves energy.
9. Consider the use renewable energy technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines and wood-fuelled heaters to meet your own energy requirements.
