Free DIY advice - Interior Painting and Decorating Tips

The decision to paint the interior of a house is a large task that requires advanced preparation and knowledge in order to properly execute the process. Many people think that painting will be fun and easy; however, that is not always the case. Remember techniques and tips while painting to assist in keeping the floor and decor free of paint as well as the walls looking great.

Painting the interior of any room can make a huge difference in the overall appearance and decor of a space. It freshens, brightens and improves the overall quality of outdated walls. Choosing the right colour to paint the walls will make a difference in the mood you are trying to achieve in the space. Bright, strong colours will add energy, while dark, rich colours will keep the room feeling a little drab and sophisticated. Neutral colours, like beige and off white will make the space coordinate with any other colours in the decor and furniture. Neutral colours are classic and will never go out of style. When choosing paint colours, always remember keep in mind the size of the room being painted. Remember that bright, light and neutral colours will make a room seem larger while dark colours will make a space seem smaller and closed in. Always remember to keep drop cloths all over the floors and butted up against the angle where the floor meets the wall. This will keep any debris and paint drips from ruining the floors. This mainly applies to interior painting rather than exterior painting.

The first step for interior painting is deciding on a paint colour. Check local retailers for the best price and value paint prior buying. A wide variety of brands and colours can be found at hardware stores, paint stores and large building centres. Be sure to also buy your supplies like paint brushes, rollers, pales, scrapers, spackling and sandpaper. Don't forget to cover all floors and decor with drop cloths. After acquiring all of the supplies, it will be time to get started painting.

Start the painting process by first prepping the walls by filling any holes with spackle. Let the spackle dry completely and then sand them until they are smooth. Brush off any dust with a dry cloth and get supplies ready to paint. Using a roller on the large areas and a brush on areas that need precise handling will save on time, like corners, trim and where the walls meet the ceiling. Always paint a coat of primer on the wall before applying the actual paint colour. Painting two coats of paint will portray the true richness of the colour.

Interior painting can be difficult and messy. Be sure you take all the necessary steps to ensure the process is executed in an orderly manner. This will ensure the job can be completed with ease and enjoyment.
