Regular boiler servicing is essential to extend the life of your boiler
Although boilers are generally reliable, efficient, and clean, boiler servicing should be done by a qualified engineer on an annual basis. If installed properly, maintenance costs for boilers are low. However, there are certain service procedures that should be performed to ensure continued safety and fuel efficiency.
There is a well-defined set of regulations, criteria, and standards for testing and servicing a boiler. Each boiler comes from the manufacturer with a service manual which should be retained by the owner for future reference. It will detail the recommended boiler servicing frequency and the procedures to be followed.
While boiler installations may vary, standard boiler servicing should include the following at a minimum:
- Examine the overall condition of the boiler
- Perform pressure tests for leaks
- Test gas pressure in all supply lines and fittings
- Test safety relief valves for proper operation
- Examine fireside and waterside gaskets and replace if necessary
- Inspect and clean low-water cut off and replace gaskets
- Flush boiler to remove sediment and loose scale
- Check front and rear doors for proper closing and sealing and replace gaskets if necessary
- Vacuum fireside surfaces
- Replace gaskets on man hole and hand hole plates
- Check burner for proper combustion
- Check for carbon monoxide leaks
A boiler breakdown can be an expensive problem to fix. If a problem occurs during the winter, finding a registered engineer can be nearly impossible and their service cost will be higher. It is far better to have an effective boiler servicing plan in place before disaster strikes.
It is important to use Gas Safe Registered and Corgi registered engineers for your boiler servicing. They have received the technical training required by the boiler manufacturers and will be qualified to make any type of boiler repair.
Regular boiler servicing will lengthen the working life of all of the components. The system needs to be inspected for scale build-up and any damage repaired. This will improve the operating efficiency of the boiler and lower the operating costs.
A boiler is an essential part of any home or building and has to be maintained properly. It represents a significant investment and needs to be taken care of and protected.
