How much can I save by installing Double Glazing?    Bookmark and Share

All buildings lose the warm air generated by their heating systems through the windows. Window glazing is a useful method in decreasing the rate at which heat is lost in buildings thus keeping the warm air inside for much longer.

Double glazing is a process by which a window is manufactured with two sheets of glass seperated by a small space amid the glasses. This space usually measures about 16mm. Air is locked-in that will ultimately serve as an insulating barrier. A drying substance must be applied prior to sealing the sheets of glass. This is to make sure that no moisture is trapped inside the glazed item.

The double glazed item must be airtight for it to be an effective insulating barrier. When condensation occurs amid the sheets of glass, it means that the glazed item is not airtight. When this happens, the double glazed window must be replaced as they cannot be repaired.

The double glazing savings

The majority of homes with windows composed of just a single pane lose about 60% of heat through the windows. Heat loss will be reduced significantly by replacing the single pane with double glazed windows. The initial investment made will be recovered quickly through savings from heating payments. When you have implemented double glazing on your windows, you should save up to 12% from heating payments.

The expenditure on double glazed windows, as well as the savings, will depend on the materials used, dimensions of the windows and the company installing them. They will therefore differ for every home. For an average home with three bedrooms, a saving of around £130 from heating bills can be achieved annually.

Double glazing does not only save you money but also reduces carbon dioxide emissions. As our homes contribute to the global problem of climate change brought about by excessive use of fossil fuel, installing double glazing on the windows will help decrease these CO2 emissions. An average of 650 kg of CO2 per year can be saved from each home with double glazed windows.

Advantages of having double glazing

  • Reduced heating bills – by simply installing double glazing on your windows you stand to save £130 from heating bills per year
  • Decreased CO2 emission – by having less significant fuel consumption your home will also produce less CO2 thereby helping in the fight against climate change and global warming
  • Added security – most intruders usually enter through the windows. Since windows with double glazing are harder to break, they provide added security
  • Style – double glazing can improve the appearance of a home. They come in a variety of designs that are pleasing to the eye, and the frames also come in various colors
  • Noise barrier – aside from keeping the warm air inside your home, double glazing acts as a noise barrier
  • Warmer home – double glazing also serves the purpose of keeping draughts from coming inside your home

Secondary glazing option

If you are reluctant to replace your windows with double glazing because they are of good quality, you have the choice of secondary glazing. This is accomplished by fitting a layer of glass and another frame into the existing window. The cost is cheaper but secondary glazing is not as effective as double glazing.
