The best way to plant a tree
A tree is a long-term investment and planting a tree is not just about digging a hole and dropping it in. For your tree to thrive and survive all seasons here's what to do: -
- Choose a suitable tree based on the climate of the location and the tree's function.
- Consider factors such as type, size, shade, color and fruiting of the tree once it matures.
- Select the right time of the year for planting tree--trees planted in late spring or summer do not survive the excessive heat. The best time to plant a tree is in fall or early spring.
- Prepare a hole two to three times the width of the root ball of your tree to let the roots ease in more easily. Handle the root ball carefully to keep it intact while you place the tree in the hole.
- Prepare the tree for planting by removing the burlap. If it's a small tree, turn it upside down and gently get it out of the pot. If it is a large tree, cut through the packaging with the goal of keep as much dirt around the roots as possible to conserve as much air so as to prevent drying.
- Place the tree in the hole gently and do not leave any roots exposed.
- Use compost manure if need be to give your tree a great start in life. Resist the use of commercial fertilizer.
- Water the newly planted tree to eliminate air pockets.
- Apply hardwood or leaf mulch to keep the water in and most weeds out.
- Stake the tree out to assist the roots to become established and keep watering it.
- Appreciate the shade and beauty of the tree as it grows and thank yourself for adding another tree to the world to conserve the environment.
Well now you've planted it, if it gets out of hand, you might find you need a tree surgeon in London to tame it...
