The most popular computer languages   

Along with the invention of the computer comes the creation of computer languages, and since then thousands of them have been developed. Only a few became popular, some for a small amount of time and the majority of these languages never even reached the mainstream market.

Learning and using a computer language in the early days was quite difficult and consumed a lot of time. But like the hardware components of a computer system, computer languages are also constantly modified and developed over time, to make them more powerful and easier to use. A simple application program that took a month to make using an old computer language can now be finished within a few weeks or even days, thanks to modern-day computer languages.

Modern as they are, there are still too many of them to learn or use, so here are some of the most popular computer languages today.

1. Java

Java is an object-oriented computer language created by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems and was launched in 1995. It was designed to be a core component of the Java platform from Sun. It is referred to as a “beautiful” computer language by many programmers.

2. C

C is a general purpose computer language. It is one of the most "influencing" computer language ever devised because many other computer languages were derived from it, like C++ and Java. Many programmers can easily migrate to Java when they know C because the syntaxes are similar.

3. PHP

PHP is a general-purpose scripting language especially popular for Web development. It is a cross-platform, HTML scripting language. It is open-source - which makes it more customizable. PHP was primarily intended to generate dynamic web pages but now it's focus has shifted to server-side scripting.

4. C#

This is an object-oriented, general-purpose computer language released by Microsoft as an element of its .NET structure. C# was actually developed from C, and is vital for developers using the .NET structure.

5. Visual Basic .Net

VB.Net is an object-oriented computer language that utilizes the .Net structure from Microsoft. It is generally viewed as a progression of the Visual Basic language.

6. Python

Python is a programming language that produces quick results and features an easy integration technique of various systems. It is an open-source, dynamic object-oriented language that uses automatic memory administration. It is used by Google because of it's simplicity and power.

7. Perl

Perl is extensively used to handle texts through Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs. It is a cross-platform, open-source, server-side computer language which is used to code Web server programs. It is a particularly unforgiving computer language.

8. JavaScript

It is a scripting language that is used on the client side of a web browser. It is object-oriented, smaller and less powerful than Java. It has plain syntax which makes it straightforward to code and compilation is not required. JavaScript is used to add and improve billions of Web pages on the internet.

9. Ruby and Ruby on Rails

Ruby is an open-source, object-oriented, flexible language that is easy to learn. It combines it's syntax from Perl, Lisp, and Smalltalk. The launching of Ruby on Rails in 2005 made the Ruby language known to many. Ruby on Rails was coded using Ruby and is popular among web application developers.
