What are the different types of plum I can grow in my English garden?
Plums are a very common and a favourite fruit tree to us. You can easily decorate your English gardens by planting plum trees there and can get the taste of delicious fruit from your own garden. I am trying to share some ideas with the varieties of plum may be perfect for your English garden here.
'Blue Tit' is average sized for a plum tree and has distinctive opaque blue skin. The inside fruit is tasty and juicy with a traditional yellow plum color. It produces a reliable crop most years and is consistently self-fertile. "Blue Tit" will pollinate other nearby plum trees and is in the pollination group 2. It has been around a fair amount of time being first bred by Laxton's in 1938.The plums are ready for harvest in mid-August.
'CZAR' are on the large size with dark purple plums. The flesh is yellow. Traditionally use for cooking, Czar is also a good eater if the fruit are allowed to fully ripen. It has the distinct advantage over some other plum trees of being self-fertile. It crops reliably and resists frost damage well. Fruit is produced in August. Czar is a traditional plum tree being bred in 1874 by Rivers.
Early Laxton is a very early plum tree, producing ripe fruit from late July onwards. The plums have attractive yellow and light red skin. The flesh has a gage type flavor, is yellow a full bodied. It can be used for both eating and cooking. It was awarded an AGM from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1916. "Early Laxton" was first introduced in 1902 from Bedford, England. It is partially self-fertile, but will crop better with other plum trees nearby.
Jefferson produces green fruit and has previously been award the award of Garden Merit. It has good disease resistance and is a reliable annual cropper. The fruit is a classic yellow and very juicy. The plums ripen ready for eating in mid August. It does require another plum tree for pollination and falls in pollination group one.
A great plum variety for cooler areas, Marjorie's Seedling flowers later than most plum trees so it misses those problem late frosts. The fruits are large, oval shaped with a true plum color. The flesh is yellow. It's really a cooker but if you leave the fruit on the tree till early October even late October, Marjorie's Seedling plums become passably good for eating.
One of the best known and popular of plum trees, Victoria produces pale red fruit as shown in the picture above. The fruit is ripe for eating around mid-August. Victoria is a versatile plum tree, producing fruit which can be eaten, used for cooking and for jams. It produces a heavy crop which often needs to be thinned if fruits are to be produced each year.
