A search engine is a software program that retrieves information on a single storage area, LAN, or multiple networks such as the internet. Search engines are commonly used to search information contained in the World Wide Web. Here are some of them and a bit of info about their features.

2. AltaVista – the company of the same name released this search engine in 1995. Aside from the common features found on major search engines, AltaVista offers free language translation services.

3. ask.com – a popular search engine that answers questions from users. It also seeks out information from sites such as Excite, MyWay.com and Ask for kids. Probably the 4th most popular search engine on the internet.

4. blogScope – a search engine designed to search blogs. It has an index of more than 150 million articles.

5. business.com – a web search engine that focuses mainly on corporate affairs and makes use of pay per click advertising.

6. careerbuilder.com – this search engine provides career search choices and to date is one of the leading job sites in the U.S.A.

7. cuil – some former employees of Google were the developers of this search engine. This search engine had the ability to classify search results based on the page’s content and showed pictures for each result. We talk about it in the past tense because it went offline in September 2010.

8. daylife – it is a news browsing engine that can gather all sorts of news from a wide range of sources which includes images and articles searches.

14. mininova – it specializes in searching torrent files. Aside from being a search engine, it also serves as a directory and it has a huge list of torrent files.

15. technocrati – searching blogs is the specialty of this web search engine. It's index includes more than 100 million blogs and roughly 275 million articles.

16. thefind.com – it was released in 2006 and popular to users doing a lot of shopping. It mainly focuses on lifestyle products.

17. yahoo! – 2nd only to Google in terms of popularity. Like its number one competitor, it also provides numerous other services like news of any topic with its Yahoo! News. It's other services include the Yahoo! Answers, Yahoo! Maps, and the online tools for employers and job hunters, Yahoo! HotJobs. A very good search engine.

18. youtube – it is the most popular website for searching videos today. It can play videos online and it permits uploading as well as downloading of video files. It's index includes several millions of videos along with user channels. It is considered the modern library of old and current videos.
