What is Linux?    Bookmark and Share

Linux is an operating system for computers and other electronic devices. An operating system is software that communicates with the computer system’s hardware and makes them accessible to other software applications.

Linux was conceived by Linus Torvalds in 1991 and it runs on a kernel of the same name. The Linux kernel was freely distributed and made accessible to other programmers for further development. Since then the Linux system has grown quickly and is constantly being updated.

The Linux operating system is free or sold at minimal cost by other companies who have developed and enhanced it for a specific function. Although it's following is may not be as large as the leading OS which is Microsoft Windows (due to the fact that Linux is a bit harder to handle when compared to Windows), Linux offers more flexibility in terms of configuration choices and it has a fantastic graphical interface.

The Linux Kernel

The Linux operating system is distinct from other Operating Systems because of its kernel. This kernel is the central command of Linux which manages the hardware, networking, and the overall coordination of various components of a computer system. The source code of Linux’s kernel can be obtained by anyone at no cost. Thus anyone having enough knowledge to modify this source code can have a Linux operating system that is customized to their liking. A lot of companies have already developed the Linux kernel to suit their specific requirements.

Obtaining Linux

In order for Linux to work effectively, it must come with a set of additional GNU programs. These GNU programs are open source which means they are free for anyone to download, modify, or use. Unlike Windows, Linux is not a compiled single operating system. For that reason, a Linux download is called "distribution" because it must come with other GNU programs to complete the operating system. A Linux distribution is a project that organizes a compilation of software and makes them available for download through the internet.

Linux for desktops and laptops

Since its creation in 1991, Linux has evolved into a popular operating system for desktops. Presently, most application software running on Windows are also made available for Linux. Either multiple versions were made for compatibility purposes, or free software was created under GNU to serve the function of different application software found in other operating systems.

Linux for servers and high-end computers

Linux has is best for running on servers, mainframes, and super computers. The majority of web servers owned by web hosting companies uses Linux. In the past ten years, Linux distributions have steadily penetrated the mainframe OS market mainly because it is cheaper than any other effective mainframe OS. Linux is also an extremely stable Operating System. Not prone to crashing like windows. This is important in servers and mainframes.

We can repair, fix and install a new operating system.
