Who is Sergey Brin?
Sergey Brin is the famous co-founder of Google, Inc., the biggest Internet business in the world today. He and Larry Page, a fellow student at Stanford University, started a project regarding Web search engines while pursuing a Doctorate degree in Computer Science. They left the university without finishing their studies to concentrate on developing what will ultimately become the Google search engine. In turn, this would make Sergey Brin to become one of the wealthiest young businessmen in the US with the tremendous success of Google, Inc.
Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin was born on August 21, 1973 in Moscow, Russia to Jewish parents. The family immigrated to America in 1979 when Sergey was only five. His mother Eugenia was reluctant to leave their homeland but Michael, his father, has already made a decision for reasons related with discrimination. Although there was no written policy of anti-Semitism in Russia, Jews were somewhat banned from attaining higher professional ranks. And so in 1978, they applied for an exit visa and were granted in May of 1979. His father was able to get a job at the University of Maryland as a professor in mathematics while his mother worked for NASA.
Computers interest Sergey even at an early age. His father helped him develop his skills in mathematics and also thought him their native Russian language. Sergey attended grade school and high school in Maryland, and in September 1990, he enlisted in the University of Maryland taking up computer science and mathematics. In May 1993, he obtained his Bachelors degree with accompanying honors.
Sergey went to Stanford University to pursue his graduate study in Computer Science courtesy of a fellowship by the National Science Foundation. It was during the orientation for freshmen that he met his partner Larry Page. They disagreed on a number of things at first but they became close friends after a while. Sergey concentrated his efforts on building data mining systems whereas Larry focused on developing methods to reference one document to another. Together they had written a paper about the anatomy of web search engine and this paved the way for the birth of Google later on.
To test their new search engine, they bought cheap computers and placed them in their dormitory. Their project achieved popularity in the campus very quickly and proved to be too much for Stanford’s computing system to handle. However, it dawned on them that they had created an outstanding engine that can search and retrieve information from the World Wide Web.
Brin and Page stopped their studies at Stanford University to concentrate on improving their search engine which they named “BackRub” as it checks links going to websites. The popularity of their search engine increased rapidly forcing the pair to further enhance its technology, move to a larger facility, and in 1998 launched Google Inc. Since then Google continued to grow at a steady rate by generating new services on the Internet and acquiring other online services and technologies which are deemed helpful to the company.
Sergey married Anne Wojcicki, a biotech analyst, in May 2007. Forbes magazine named Brin as the fifth most powerful person in the world sharing the position with Page in 2009. And in 2010, the same magazine named Brin and Page as the 24th wealthiest person in the world each with more than 17 billion USD personal worth.
Today, Sergey Brin remains active in running Google, Inc.
