Roof Terraces in London
Roof terraces are becoming increasingly popular as Londoners seek to make the most of any outside space they may have. Imagine drinking a nice glass of wine as you relax on the roof, watching the sun set over the city! As well as beautifying the surrounding area, roof gardens can also reduce energy consumption, cut noise pollution and increase wildlife activity.
Key elements in garden roof terrace design
For most roof terraces the key elements in the design are seating areas, screens for privacy and plants to give a secluded, intimate, garden feel. Roof terrace gardens are often more private than ground level gardens - especially in London. There are usually several properties overlooking a garden in the Capital! Remember though, plants are exposed to winds and temperature drops at roof top level, where at ground level they have greater shielding from the elements. Therefore, hardy plants such as coastal varieties are recommended here.
Rooftop garden lighting and furniture
What really makes the space special is stylish furniture, fitted seating areas and waterfeatures. Perhaps the most significant transformation comes from the lighting. Different colours and up-lights can transform a roof terrace into a relaxing oasis or vibrant entertainment space. Check out our Outdoor Garden Lighting section for more details.
Initial meeting
The first step is to visit you in your property, discuss your requirements and assess the viability of constructing a garden roof terrace. We'll give you some initial advice, listen to your ideas and discuss your budget. We'll investigate the practicalities of your proposed roof terrace. We need to consider whether you will require planning permission, whether the property is structurally sound enough to accomodate a roof terrace, and how it will be constructed. |
 |
Roof terrace designer
If it's feasible, we'll then suggest you speak to our garden designer and follow the design procedure from there. However, you may have already selected an architect or garden designer. No problem. We can offer a full service, from design and construction to planting - but we're just as happy to work on any one of those elements. |
 |
Architects plans and material selection
Roof terraces can be complex and therefore may require a planning application. Once the applications have been submitted and approved, a final design and plan can be drawn up. Now the materials can be selected, furniture sourced, planting, lighting, sound, outdoor heating and irrigation can be chosen and added to the plan. At this stage, if we're in the design process, you will be given a full quotation for the construction of your roof garden. |

How do I know if I my roof terrace will support a garden?
Well, you need to make sure that you have somewhere to put a door to get access to the roof garden and you'll need to have enough space inside for the terrace to be re-inforced to take the extra weight. But we can have a look at this for you. We'll be able to spot the potential for a roof garden withing the first meeting.
I have a roof terrace but it isn’t flat. What now?
Well, it will be more expensive because a flat roof is easy to work with. However, even if your roof is pitched all is not lost. We can build an external wall to the correct height and create a flat surface from that.
How much will a roof terrace garden cost?
A basic roof garden will start at £6,000 fo a small terrace. There is no limit to how much you can spend if you have the space! Remember, in the long term the garden will more than pay for itself. Properties with a garden roof terrace fetch between 10 and 25 percent more than those without in the same area.

I was very happy with Richard's plan. It was very thorough and detailed. It was very well designed. In fact, we have the drawing of the garden in a frame on the kitchen wall.

We were both impressed with Alan's ideas and knowledge and we'd be happy to go ahead with a concept plan.

Richard's design is outstanding. I think the garden will look much better than we envisaged. There are some wonderful little touches. I would certainly like to go ahead.

I was very impressed with Serviceteam. From the very outset I received a professional service. The quote was well laid out and informative. The price was good. The team was friendly. The project manager - knowledgeable and helpful. The project and standard of workmanship was exceptional. I would have no hesistation in recommending them.

I've had a really good experience with Serviceteam. They are a very professional company. From start to finish, I felt like I'd been kept in the loop at every stage. And the final result is exactly what I wanted. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a first class landscaped garden. Once again, thankyou for all your hard work.

Last summer we decided to have the garden landscaped. A friend recommended Serviceteam. They had used them last year and said they were great. They came around to visit and I was impressed with Ryan - the team leader. He really knew what he was talking about and had some great ideas for the garden. Similar ideas to the way we wanted the garden to look. We received a good quote and finally decided on new lawn, a wooden deck, a new fence and a garden path.
The work started two weeks later at 8am on a Monday morning! The project was to last 2 weeks. I left them to it went to work. I gave Ryan a set of keys. I have to say over the 2 weeks the team worked really hard. Towards the end of the job until 7pm! We did have rain for 3 days during the project, which cost us some time, so the project finished 3 days over. But Ryan explained everything to me every evening - why there mght be a slight change to the plan, where they could save time. I really appreciated that level of communication and I understood the decisions we made were to keep the project on track.
Like any building project, there is a certain level of upheaval, but the site looked tidy every evening and the team were really considerate, understanding that what to them was a building site - was our home.
When the project was finished, it was a transformation. It looked beautiful. Just as we'd discussed and just what we wanted. Ryan explained that we needed to take some care with the lawn until it had settled and that the deck would settle as the wood expanded and contracted. But if there were any problems I should give him a call. Thankfully - so far - there haven't been any.
I think I've had a great service. I would recommend Serviceteam to anyone. In fact, I have already recommended several friends. If you are looking for the best landscaping company in London - look no further!
